C1 vs. C2 Tile Adhesive: Which Grade Do 2x4 Porcelain Slabs & Marble Need?

When reviewing project BOQs (Bills of Quantities) in Pakistan, contractors and builders frequently choose between C1 standard-grade and C2 heavy-duty polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesives. Selecting the right formulation prevents hollow or de-bonded tiles while optimizing project budgets.

When Is Standard C1 Grade Ideal?

C1 (Standard Cementitious Polymer Adhesive) formulations are built for dependable everyday interior bonding. Products like Readicam Tile Bond and Total Tile Bond are ideal for interior residential floors, standard 12x24 or 24x24 ceramic/vitrified tiles, and dry commercial corridors.

When Should You Upgrade to Heavy-Duty C2 Grade?

C2 (High-Polymer Waterproof Cementitious Adhesive) contains a higher concentration of redispersible polymers for superior grip on non-porous slabs and wet/heated surfaces. You should specify RHR ReadyMix Tile Bond (C2 Grade, 150% Performance) for:

  • Large-format vitrified porcelain slabs (2x4 ft, 32x64 in, and heavy calibrated granite/marble).
  • Exterior building facades exposed to 45°C+ Sindh & Punjab summer heat.
  • Swimming pools, jacuzzis, fountains, and commercial wet kitchens.
  • Tile-on-tile renovation over sound existing mosaic or ceramic floors without demolition.

Pro Contractor Tip: Back-Butter Large Slabs

For any tile larger than 2x2 ft, comb adhesive onto the leveled substrate in one direction (never swirl) and apply a thin 1–2mm flat skim coat on the back of the slab to achieve 95%+ contact coverage before grouting with Strong Hi-Mix Grout.
